Folding dining chairs for small spaces earn their place twice: once at the table, and once in the slot where they wait between meals. A regular dining chair keeps a full footprint on the floor all day. A folding chair can shrink to a strip 2.5 to 3.5 inches deep that leans behind a door. Listings bury the number that matters, the folded size, and some never publish it. This guide compares five Amazon-US folding chairs by published open footprint, folded thickness, seat height, and capacity.
This is the fourth Eat guide. If you only need backless seats, see best stackable stools for small spaces. If the table is the problem, start with best drop-leaf tables for studio apartments or wall-mounted dining tables for small kitchens.

The short answer
Buy the Flash Furniture HERCULES wood folding chair (2-pack) if storage space is the constraint. It publishes the thinnest fold here, 2.5″, an 18″ seat height, and a 350 lb rating in Amazon’s spec table. Take the Winsome Robin set of 4 for an all-wood look at a lower seat (17.4″), but note its 170 lb limit and that its 2.77″ fold comes from retailer listings, not Amazon. Choose the Flash HERCULES Premium Curved padded chair when comfort beats thickness: 2.5″ foam seat, 300 lb, folds to 3.5″.
Skip the MECO Sudden Comfort Deluxe and Amazon Basics sets if you are planning a tight closet slot, because neither listing publishes a folded thickness. Skip all five if anyone needs armrests, since every pick here is armless.
Same scale. Open vs folded footprint (top-down)
Ghost outline = open footprint in use. Amber = published folded slot. Scale 1″ = 3 px.
Drawn from published open and folded sizes only. The Robin folded figure comes from Winsome retailer listings, not the Amazon page.

Side-by-side comparison
Seat height and folded height vs a 30″ table (side view, same scale)
Amber = seat height. Gray = folded chair, drawn at published folded thickness and height. Dashed line = 30″ table top. Scale 1″ = 3 px.
Under a 30″ table top, an 18″ seat leaves 12″, a 17.4″ seat leaves 12.6″, and a 19.25″ seat leaves 10.75″ (calculated). MECO and Amazon Basics do not publish seat height or folded size, so they are not drawn.

What we prioritized
We prioritized folding chairs sold on Amazon US with a backrest, a dining-height seat, and a published folded size. Three picks publish one. We kept two popular 4-packs that do not, because they fill the padded and high-capacity slots, and we say “not published” wherever a figure is missing. We compared published specs on Amazon listings and used Winsome retailer listings for the Robin’s folded size because the Amazon page leaves it out. We ruled out chairs that fold thicker than 7″, plus several listings that were unavailable or returned 404 on 2026-10-08.
We do not run a lab and we have not sat in these chairs. Sizes, folds, seat heights, and capacities come from the listings. Floor areas, gaps, and folded-stack depths are simple arithmetic on those numbers. Clearance figures come from the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines. How we research.
How to choose folding dining chairs for a small space
Measure the storage slot first. Folded chairs lean side by side, so the slot depth you need is folded thickness times the number of chairs. Four Flash wood chairs need 10″ of wall depth, four Robins about 11.1″, and four Flash padded chairs 14″ (calculated). Also check the folded height: these three stand 35.25-37.25″ tall folded, which rules out the space under most shelves.
Then check clearance at the table. The NKBA recommends at least 32″ from the table edge to a wall behind a seated diner when nobody walks past, 36″ if people need to edge past, and 44″ to walk past. A folding chair needs the same room as any chair while you sit. Not sure it fits your room? Check your measurements first.
Match seat height to the table. NKBA plans table seating around 30″ high tops. Under a 30″ top, an 18″ seat leaves 12″ of thigh room (calculated). The Flash padded chair’s 19.25″ seat leaves 10.75″, tighter under a thick apron. NKBA also suggests a knee space 24″ wide per diner at a 30″ table, so chairs 17.5-19.3″ wide leave a few inches between neighbors (calculated).
Read capacity as a hard limit. Published ratings here run from 170 lb (Robin) to 350 lb (Flash wood and Amazon Basics). If one chair will see heavy daily use, buy for the person, not the fold.
Mistakes to avoid in a small room
Buying a chair whose listing never publishes a folded size, then finding it will not fit the gap you planned. Forgetting that folded chairs get taller: every published fold here is over 35″. Choosing a 19″+ seat for a table with a deep apron. Assuming a 4-pack folds as thin as a 2-pack from another brand. Planning only the storage slot and not the 32″ of clearance you still need behind the table at meals.
FAQ
How thin do folding dining chairs fold?
In this set, the published folds run 2.5″ (Flash HERCULES wood), 2.77″ (Winsome Robin, per retailer listings), and 3.5″ (Flash Premium Curved padded). MECO and Amazon Basics do not publish a folded size.
Are folding chairs comfortable enough for everyday dining?
That depends on seat depth and padding more than the fold. The Flash Premium Curved has 2.5″ of foam and a 15.5″ deep seat. The Flash wood chair has a thinner vinyl pad and a 14.75″ deep seat. The Robin has a bare slatted wood seat. Owner reviews on padded models are mixed on firmness.
How much space do I need behind a dining chair?
The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines recommend at least 32″ from the table edge to a wall when no one passes behind the diner, 36″ to edge past, and 44″ to walk past.
Folding chairs or stackable stools for a small kitchen?
Choose folding chairs when you want a backrest at a 30″ table. Choose stools for counter or bar height, or when a stack in one corner is easier than a fold behind a door. Our stackable stools guide compares stack counts and folded stools.
