A kitchen island cart for a small kitchen has one job a fixed island cannot do: leave when you need the floor back. The catch is depth. Every inch of cart depth comes out of your aisle, and a drop leaf that turns a cart into a breakfast bar can add 7 to 11 inches more. Listings often show the leaf up and bury the folded depth. This guide compares five Amazon-US carts by published depth folded and open, top size, height, and capacity, then checks each against the NKBA work-aisle guideline.
This is the fifth Eat guide. For seating at a cart’s leaf, see best stackable stools for small spaces. If you need a table more than a prep surface, see wall-mounted dining tables for small kitchens or best drop-leaf tables for studio apartments.

The short answer
Buy the HOMCOM rolling island with drop leaf if you want a breakfast bar that folds back to 16.25″ deep. It publishes the clearest numbers here: 41.25″ wide, 23.5″ deep with the leaf up, and 143 lb total capacity (44 lb on the counter). Take the Garvee 42 in cart for more seating depth: it goes from 16″ to 27.5″. Choose the MAHANCRIS cart for the smallest footprint in use (23.7″ x 15.8″, 110 lb), or the Winsome Wood 82027 for a solid beechwood cart with no leaf at 26.9″ x 18.2″ (it showed as currently unavailable on 2026-10-08).
Skip the GRUSIGN unless you have room for 29.5″ of depth with the leaf up, because its folded depth is not published. Skip all five if your aisle is already under 42″ before the cart goes in.

Side-by-side comparison
Aisle math: cart parked opposite a counter (top-down, same scale)
Gray = counter. Dashed span = 42″ NKBA work aisle for one cook. Amber = HOMCOM cart, leaf down; outline = leaf up. Scale 1″ = 3 px.
Calculated from the HOMCOM published depths and the NKBA 42″ one-cook work aisle. For a walkway that is not a work aisle, NKBA’s minimum is 36″, which takes 6″ off each figure.
| Model | Width | Depth folded / open | Gap for 42″ aisle | Height | Capacity |

| HOMCOM 801-332V81WT | 41.25″ | 16.25″ / 23.5″ | 58.25″ / 65.5″ | 35.5″ | 143 lb total |
| Garvee 42 in | 41.34″ | 16″ / 27.5″ | 58″ / 69.5″ | 35.43″ | 100 lb |

What we prioritized
We prioritized rolling carts on Amazon US that publish a depth, because depth decides whether a cart fits an aisle. We favored drop-leaf carts that publish both the folded and the leaf-up size, then covered one compact folding-top cart, one no-leaf wood cart, and one large-top island. We compared published specs on Amazon listings and flagged every conflict between bullets, tables, and descriptions. We ruled out more than ten carts that were unavailable, returned 404, or published no depth for the folded leaf.
We do not run a lab and we have not used these carts. Sizes and capacities come from the listings. Gaps and leaf depths are simple arithmetic on those numbers. Aisle and walkway minimums come from the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines. How we research.
How to choose a kitchen island cart for a small kitchen
Start with the gap, not the cart. Measure from the front of your counter to the wall or cabinet where the cart will park. Subtract 42″ for a one-cook work aisle (NKBA), or 36″ if the space is only a walkway. What is left is the deepest cart you can park there. Not sure it fits your room? Check your measurements first.
Plan for the leaf position you actually use. If the leaf stays up all day, use the leaf-up depth. The HOMCOM needs 58.25″ folded and 65.5″ open to keep a 42″ aisle; the Garvee needs 58″ and 69.5″ (calculated). If you fold the leaf after breakfast, you only need the open depth when nobody is cooking.
Check height against your counter. These carts run from 33.3″ (MAHANCRIS) to 35.5″ (HOMCOM). A cart that matches your counter height works as a continuous prep surface. A lower cart works better as a landing spot or a seat-height ledge. For stools at a leaf, NKBA plans a 24″ wide knee space per diner at a 36″ counter, so a 41.25″ leaf fits one full knee space; two diners would get about 20.6″ each (calculated).
Read capacity before you load the top. HOMCOM separates a 44 lb counter limit from its 143 lb total. Winsome and GRUSIGN do not publish a capacity, so do not assume one for a heavy mixer or microwave.
Mistakes to avoid in a small kitchen
Buying by the leaf-up photo and forgetting that depth comes out of the aisle. Parking a cart where an oven, dishwasher, or fridge door swings into the same gap. Trusting one size line when the listing has two (the Garvee and Winsome listings both do). Ignoring item weight: the drop-leaf carts here weigh 83.8-96 lb, so moving them daily on soft flooring is work. Putting a heavy appliance on a top rated for 44 lb.
FAQ
How much space do I need around a kitchen island cart?
The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines recommend a work aisle of at least 42″ for one cook and 48″ for multiple cooks, and a walkway of at least 36″. Add the cart’s published depth to see the total gap you need.
What is the narrowest kitchen cart in this guide?
By depth in use, the MAHANCRIS at 15.8″. By width, also the MAHANCRIS at 23.7″, followed by the Winsome Wood 82027 at 26.9″. The HOMCOM (16.25″) and Garvee (16″) are close when their leaves are down.
Can a drop-leaf kitchen cart replace a dining table?
For one or two people, it can serve as a breakfast bar. The Garvee’s 27.5″ leaf-up depth and the HOMCOM’s 23.5″ give the most room. For more seats, a drop-leaf table is usually a better fit.
Do kitchen carts lock in place?
All five listings mention lockable wheels or brakes. HOMCOM, Garvee, and MAHANCRIS publish two locking casters out of four; GRUSIGN publishes two brakes on five casters; Winsome says lockable casters.
