We looked for a rule on how far a desk should sit from a bed in a home. We did not find one. What you actually need is simple to work out: room for your chair while you sit, plus room for anyone who has to get past. The first part is the one people forget.

Planning the whole room? Run your numbers in Will it fit?

The short answer

Measure from the bed frame to the desk edge, then subtract your chair. Our Will it fit? calculator assumes a chair in use takes 30 inches behind the desk edge. So a 36 inch gap that looks open leaves 6 inches once you sit down.

If nobody passes while you sit, the gap only has to hold the chair. If the gap is also the way to the door, add the walkway on top: 30 inches of chair plus a 30 inch walkway is 60 inches between bed and desk.

The gap between a bed and a desk is really two things: room for the chair, and room for anyone walking past it.

Chair zone plus walkway

Scale 1″ = 4 px. A 36″ gap with the calculator’s 30″ chair zone inside it.

Bed Chair zone 30″ 6″ Desk Wall 36″ floor, bed to desk edge 36″ − 30″ chair = 6″ left to walk (our arithmetic, calculator default chair).

If your measured chair zone is bigger than the gap, the chair hits the bed when you stand up. If someone must pass behind you, the walkway stacks on top of the chair zone.

How wide the walkway should be is your call. The calculator offers three settings, and each one stacks on the 30 inch chair zone:

Chair only30″
+ 24″ squeeze54″
+ 30″ walkway60″
+ 36″ walkway66″

Floor needed between bed and desk edge. Walkway settings from the calculator: “24″. Sideways squeeze”, “30″. Comfortable”, “36″. Two people or a wheelchair”. Totals are our arithmetic. Bar length relative to 66″.

The calculator grades what is left: at or above your walkway setting it says the desk fits, from 22 inches up it says “fits, barely”, and below that it says it doesn’t fit.

For comparison only: The ADA 2010 Standards require 36 inches of clear width for a walking route in public buildings and workplaces. No equivalent rule exists for homes, and the ADA does not apply to a rental bedroom. We use the figure only as a comparison point. The calculator’s 36 inch setting happens to match it.

How to measure your chair zone

  1. Sit at any table the way you work, chair pulled in.
  2. Stand up the way you normally do. Let the chair roll back.
  3. Measure from the table edge to the back of the chair or the furthest caster.
  4. Compare it with the floor between the bed frame and the desk edge. Measure the frame, not the mattress.

Your result depends on your chair, your floor (casters roll further on hard floors) and how you stand up. The calculator’s 30 inches is a default setting, not a standard. Its compact or armless setting is 24 inches. A compact office chair can shrink the zone, and a shallower desk widens the gap inch for inch. How deep to go is covered in desk depth: 24 vs 30 inches and is 24 inches deep enough for a desk?.

Worked example: 10×10 room, queen bed

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. Put it in a corner of a 10 ft (120 inch) room and put a 48 by 24 inch desk on the wall facing the side of the bed. The floor between bed and desk edge is 36 inches. The chair takes 30, leaving 6 inches. The calculator returns “Only 6″” and calls it a fail.

Move the desk to the headboard wall, beside the bed, and the chair rolls out into the open room instead. The calculator then reports 66 inches clear. We walk through every bed size in will a 48 inch desk fit in a 10×10 room?.

Try it with your room

Open Will it fit?, enter your room, your bed and your desk, then set the chair space to the number you just measured. It shows what is left to walk through, after the chair.

FAQ

How far should a desk be from a bed?

No home rule we found sets this. At minimum the gap must hold your chair in use (30″ in the calculator’s default). Add a walkway if anyone passes: 60″ total with the calculator’s 30″ walkway setting.

Is 36 inches between a bed and a desk enough?

For the chair alone, usually yes. For walking past someone seated, no: with a 30″ chair zone, 6″ remain.

Do ADA numbers apply to my bedroom?

No. The 2010 ADA Standards cover public accommodations and workplaces. We quote 36″ only as a comparison point.
